Juliette's Thanksgiving Adventure

Image of sad girl walking homeWhen Girl Scouting's founder, Juliette Gordon Low, was little, people fattened and then killed their own Thanksgiving turkeys.

One November, just before they cut off the family's turkey's head, Juliette convinced her family that brutal decapitation was inhuman. She argued that "Ol' Tom" should be chloroformed first, so he wouldn't feel anything. Her family finally gave in and agreed to do just that. Then they plucked the turkey and put him in the icebox (it takes a long time to pluck out all those feathers, and they were so tired, they figured the rest of the preparation could wait until later). When they opened the icebox the next day, the bird was wide-awake and bolted out of his frozen "cage." The cook, thinking that the bird's plucked, featherless body was a ghost, started screaming and jumped up on top of the stove!
